After spending two nights in a campervan park up in Bilbao, we set off to stay at our first campsite Camper Sierra Madrid, which cost us just 20 euros for the night. It was the perfect spot to unwind before continuing on our journey. From there, we drove to the charming village of Buitrago del Lozoya, nestled in the Madrid region, on our way to Albacete. Here’s a look at our quick but enjoyable visit to this beautiful, historic village.

Buitrago del Lozoya is a charming medieval village nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Norte, surrounded by the serene landscapes of the Lozoya River valley.
Recap On Our Travels
If you’re new to the blog, here’s a quick recap: my family of six, along with our dog, is spending the next few months traveling across Southern Europe in our motorhome. The kids are being home educated on the road, and our first stop is Spain.
Highlights of Motorhome Visit to Buitrago del Lozoya
Motorhome Parking
As we were traveling in a large motorhome (7mx2.4mx3m), we had to park on the outskirts of the village, beside the main highway. The ground was a bit rough in that area, but it worked for our quick stop.
One thing to note if you’re traveling in a motorhome or a larger vehicle is that the car parking on the outskirts of the village can get busy. We were glad we parked near the exit, as it would have been tricky to maneuver out of the busy parking area, especially if we’d parked deeper in. So, it’s worth considering the parking situation if you’re in a larger vehicle.

The Historic Walls and Castle
One of the first things that struck us about Buitrago del Lozoya was the impressive medieval walls that surround the village. As we wandered the cobblestone streets, we couldn’t help but feel like we had stepped back in time. The Castillo de Buitrago is a sight to behold, though we didn’t venture on top of the battlements. To be honest, with our three-year-old running around, we decided it was best to skip the high walls – he’s fast and always on the go! Instead, we admired the views from below, which were just as stunning.

A Moment of Peace by the River Lozoya
We walked down to the Río Lozoya, where we paused for a moment by the river to take in the tranquility of the surroundings. Although we didn’t have time for a full exploration, our walk down to the river was a highlight of our visit. The calm, clear water and lush greenery provided the perfect setting for a brief moment of peace. It was a lovely place to relax, especially after our busy few days in the city of Bilbao.

Final Thoughts on Buitrago del Lozoya
Our visit to Buitrago del Lozoya was short, but it was a wonderful break on our journey to Albacete. This hidden gem, with its mix of natural beauty, medieval history, and peaceful atmosphere, is definitely worth a stop. If you’re passing through this part of Spain, take a moment to explore the village, enjoy the views, and maybe even relax by the river like we did.

My Tips for Visiting Buitrago del Lozoya:
- The village is small and easy to explore on foot.
- If you’re traveling with young kids, be cautious around the castle’s high walls – it’s a bit of a climb, and the views might be intimidating.
- For a quick and peaceful stop, the Río Lozoya is a perfect spot to stretch your legs and enjoy the natural beauty. There are some benches to sit on and enjoy the view.
- Be mindful of parking, especially if you’re in a larger vehicle. We found a spot near the exit, but the car parking can get busy.
Come back for my next post when I write up about our visit to the village of Chinchilla, a historic town perched on a rocky hill in the province of Albacete, offering stunning views over the surrounding plains.
